Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is one of the essential components of English language learning, as it enables students to comprehend and communicate effectively. However, many tenth-grade students still encounter difficulties in acquiring vocabulary due to limited engagement and the use of conventional teaching methods. To address this issue, gamified learning applications such as Educandy can provide an interactive and enjoyable learning experience that encourages students to actively participate in vocabulary learning. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of the Educandy application on students’ vocabulary mastery at the tenth-grade students of SMAN 4 Kediri. This study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental research design with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was selected using a cluster sampling technique, in which one class of tenth-grade students was chosen as the research participants. The research instrument was a vocabulary test administered before and after the treatment. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-sample t-test through IBM SPSS Statistics. The findings indicated that the implementation of Educandy significantly improved students’ vocabulary mastery. The post-test mean score was higher than the pre-test mean score, demonstrating that students achieved better vocabulary performance after the treatment. Furthermore, the paired-sample t-test revealed that the significance value was lower than 0.05, indicating that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. The analysis of vocabulary aspects showed that all aspects improved after the implementation of Educandy. Among these aspects, the most substantial improvements were found in pronunciation, word class, and word use, indicating that Educandy was particularly effective in enhancing students’ pronunciation accuracy, understanding of grammatical categories, and appropriate vocabulary usage in context. In conclusion, the findings demonstrate that Educandy has a significant positive impact on students’ vocabulary mastery. Therefore, Educandy can be considered an effective and engaging learning media for teaching vocabulary in English language classrooms.
