Abstract
Reading is an activity that acquires meaning from printed words or symbols, and how to use this ability to recognize, understand, and interpret words. In reading process, most students have difficulty to understand the text, such identifying main idea, topic sentence, supporting detail, and finding guessing the meaning of word. Considering the students’ difficulties to understand the text, a strategy is needed to help the students increase their reading ability. Therefore, the teacher should use appropriate strategy to help the students understanding the text. One of the strategies that can be applied is summarizing strategy. Summarizing strategy is the process of identifying important information, topics and ideas in the text, and integrating them into clear and concise statement, conveying the basic meaning of the text. The aims of this research are to know students’ reading ability before and after using summarizing strategy, and to know whether there is any significant influence of using summarizing strategy to the students of SMKN 2 Kediri in Academic Year 2021/2022. The researcher used a pre-experimental research and quantitative approach with one group pretest and post-test. This research was conducted at SMKN 2 Kediri. Eleventh grade students were the population of the research that consists of 144 students and the sample was XI Accounting 3 class that consists of 36 students. The students were given pretest, treatment, and posttest. The treatments were conducted twice in order to know whether is a significant influence of using summarizing strategy in reading ability. The data result got from students’ score of pretest and posttest were analyzed using t-test formula used SPSS version 23. The data analysis shows that the mean score of pretest is 63,47, it is in good category. Guessing meaning of the word aspect became the most difficult aspect in reading. Meanwhile, the mean score of posttest is 81,66, it is in excellent category. Guessing meaning aspect was still the difficult one, however, the students’ score still increased. The highest improvement was in finding topic sentence aspect. The t-score computation shows that t-score (-14,787) is higher than t-table (1,690) in the level significant of 5%. The result of the research shows that there is any significant influence of using the summarizing strategy. In sum, finding topic sentence is easier for the students to master than other indicators of reading ability such as: main idea, supporting detail, and guessing meaning of the word. Furthermore, this study implies that summarizing as one of the reading strategies that should be taught explicitly to the students.
