Abstract

This research was motivated by the fact that many students still experienced difficulties in mastering English vocabulary, especially in understanding word meanings, interpreting contextual meanings, and selecting appropriate words according to different contexts. These problems affected students' ability to comprehend texts and communicate effectively in English. Therefore, appropriate learning media are needed to facilitate vocabulary learning. One of the digital tools that can support vocabulary learning is DeepL Translator, which provides contextual translations and alternative word choices that help students understand vocabulary more effectively. The research problems of this study were: (1) To what extent does students' vocabulary mastery improve after being taught by using DeepL Translator? and (2) Is there any significant effect of using DeepL Translator on the vocabulary mastery of the eleventh-grade students at SMAN 6 Kediri? This study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 36 students of class XI-11 at SMAN 6 Kediri. The research instrument was a vocabulary test consisting of 25 multiple-choice questions measuring three indicators of vocabulary mastery, namely word meaning, contextual meaning, and appropriate word use. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, and the paired samples t-test with IBM SPSS Statistics Version 27. The results of the study showed that the students' mean score improved from 77.00 in the pre-test to 85.22 in the post-test. The normality test indicated that both the pre-test and post-test data were normally distributed, with significance values of 0.067 and 0.097, respectively. Furthermore, the paired samples t-test produced a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which was lower than the significance level of 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected, while the alternative hypothesis (H₁) was accepted. It can be concluded that the use of DeepL Translator had a significant effect on the vocabulary mastery of the eleventh-grade students at SMAN 6 Kediri. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that English teachers integrate DeepL Translator into vocabulary learning activities as a supplementary learning medium. Future researchers are also encouraged to conduct similar studies using different research designs, larger samples, or different English language skills to obtain more comprehensive findings.
