Abstract

ABSTRACT The primary objective of this empirical study was to investigate and evaluate the effectiveness of utilizing Webtoon comic as an instructional digital medium in improving the English reading comprehension skills of ninth-grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Kediri during the academic year 2025/2026. This research employed a quantitative methodology with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design. A total of 32 ninth-grade junior high school students participated as the sample of the study, selected through purposive sampling. The instructional intervention focused on comprehending narrative texts through the multimodal affordances of Webtoon digital comics across several structured treatment sessions. Data were collected using validated reading comprehension objective tests administered before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the treatment. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired sample t-test computed via IBM SPSS Statistics. The findings revealed that the students' mean reading comprehension score improved by 12.00 points, increasing significantly from 63.50 in the pre-test to 75.50 in the post-test. The paired sample t-test yielded a t-value of -8.031 with degrees of freedom (df) = 31 and a two-tailed significance value of p = 0.000, which is lower than the significance threshold of α = 0.05. This statistical evidence leads to the rejection of the null hypothesis and confirms that the implementation of Webtoon comic significantly enhances students' English reading comprehension. Consequently, Webtoon comic is strongly recommended as an engaging, interactive, and pedagogically effective digital medium for EFL reading classrooms.
